In Paris, at the beginning of the First World War, a sweeper and a poor girl have a great and poignant love story. When he returns blind from the front, she chooses to stay by his side to care for and comfort him. This film is an adaptation of a play by Austin Strong written in 1922. It was a great success at the time, winning three Oscars: for best director, best screenplay (Benjamin Glazer) and best actress (J. Gaynor). In 1937 Henri King directed a remake with James Stewart.
