Christopher Cross (Edward G. Robinson), an honest bank clerk, has only one great passion, painting, despite the opposition of his wife Adele (Rosalind Ivan). His life changes dramatically, however, when he meets a young prostitute, Kitty March (Joan Bennet), with whom he falls madly in love. Kitty, with the complicity of her lover Johnny Prince (Dan Duryea), manages to trap him by exploiting his taste for art, but ends up falling victim to her trap herself. However, it is not the real culprit who will pay…

In this remake of Jean Renoir’s La Chienne, Fritz Lang takes up the theme of the love triangle that he had already used in his film The Woman in th Window, reintroducing themes that were familiar to him, to the point of obsession: from destiny capable of crushing every human being to the mocking futility of human justice.
