Kay and Buckley, who have been married for some time, announce the good news to their respective families: Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) is expecting a child. Their parents are happy and eagerly await the joyous event, except for Stanley (Spencer Tracy) who is still shaken by the news. He doesn’t feel old enough to be a grandfather yet, and the birth threatens to jeopardise his plans to travel to Europe. The child is born and everyone thinks he is beautiful, except Stanley who sees him as a disrespectful, screaming little monster… Vincente Minnelli must be considered the creator of the modern musical, which is based more on space than on pompous stagecraft, while retaining its elegance. However, Minnelli also distinguished himself in the field of comedy, with films such as Father of the Bride, which also starred Spencer Tracy. There is a remake made in 1991, with Steve Martin in Tracy’s place.
