One of his most effective comedies, The Mariage Circle (1924) is a classic example of the Berlin director’s output, having arrived in the United States. The famous ‘Lubitsch touch’, what Billy Wilder described as the singular ability to give even the smallest details the brilliance and lightness of wit, envelops the entire film, starring actors of the calibre of Monte Blue, Florence Vidor, Marie Prevost and Adolphe Menjou. Set in Vienna in the 1920s, the story revolves around two couples, Dr Braun and his new wife Charlotte, Charlotte’s best friend Mizzi, married to Professor Stock. Ambiguous cross-relationships ensue between the four, with Mizzi trying to steal her husband away from her friend while Stock hires a detective to catch her in the act and divorce her…
