Vladimir Dubrovsky (Rudolph Valentino), a Cossack enlisted in the Russian army, meets Tsarina Catherine II (Louise Dresser) when he rescues her carriage, in which the young Mascha (Vilma Bànky) is also present. Faced with the Tsarina’s advances, Vladimir decides to flee from the imperial palace, but soon afterwards he receives a letter from his father informing him that he has been violently expelled from his lands. When Vladimir manages to reach his family, he discovers that his father has died. He vows to take revenge and help the villagers who have fallen victim to the cruel Kyrilla, hides himself under a black mask and becomes a sort of Robin Hood. However, he will soon have to choose between love and revenge… One of the most critically acclaimed films by Rudolph Valentino, who is very comfortable in this role, due in particular to the skilful direction of Clarence Brown.
