George Jones (Barry Sullivan), immobilised by severe mental problems, is convinced that his wife Ellen (Loretta Young) is cheating on him with one of her former lovers, a doctor. In order to take revenge, he sends a letter to the district attorney in which he accuses Ellen of trying to poison him with the complicity of her lover. After telling his wife about his plan, George dies of a stroke. His wife tries at all costs to recover the letter already sent… The talent of Tay Garnett, consecrated by films such as The Postman Always Rings Twice or Seven Sinners, finds fertile ground in this nervous and oppressive thriller, shot almost in real time, whose perverse mecanism threatens to crush an ordinary woman masterfully played by Loretta Young (The Stranger, The Farmer’s Daughter).
