To please her dying father, a judge and Lord of the Crown, known as the Executioner because of his relentless severity in his trials of Irish patriots, Connaught O’Brien (June Collyer) agrees to marry the treacherous Darcy (Earle Foxe), even though she is in love with the young Dermot (Larry Kent). Victor McLaglen, in his second role with John Ford, is an Irishman returning home from the Foreign Legion to avenge a wrong done to his sister by a violent man. The film, with cinematography by George Schneiderman, confirms Ford’s great bond with his family’s homeland, Ireland, ‘too small a place for such a love’. John Wayne also makes his very first Ford appearance, in the role of a spectator who breaks down a protective net.
