Gabriel (Courtney Foote) is a monk living in the Middle Ages who devotes his life to completing a statue of the truth, but is eventually murdered by the mob when it turns out that his work represents a naked woman. The Gabriel of our time is a pastor of a religious congregation in a big city where religion is only a matter of appearance. The hypocrisy of the congregation is revealed in a series of vignettes in which the naked truth, literally interpreted by a naked woman, reveals its greed, its lure to sex and power. Hypocrites turns out to be a surprisingly complex film, both narratively and technically, presenting the parallel stories of a Christian ascetic of the past and a pastor of the present, with most of the cast playing two roles.
