Pabst’s melodrama, adapted from a novel by Ilja Erenburg, is set in the Crimea, Russia and Paris, telling the story of the love between a young Frenchwoman, Jeanne Ney (Edith Jeanne) and the young Bolshevik Andreas (Uno Hunning) during the Russian Civil War, a love opposed by the treacherous Khalibiev (Fritz Rasp). Pabst used mainly natural light and real former Russian officers. But despite the use of realistic techniques and a seemingly very conventional narrative – even though references to Pudovkin, Otto Dix and Georg Grosz are not lacking – The Love of Jeanne Ney (Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney) is a film that confirms Pabst’s brilliance in analysing the complexity of human psychology.
