Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor), who wants to become an actress, leaves her province for Hollywood to find success. She ends up meeting the famous actor Norman Maine (Fredric March) by chance. After marrying her, he uses all his influence to help her realise her dream and become a star. But as his wife, known as Vicky Lester, becomes more and more popular, Maine’s star quickly fades. He took refuge in alcohol and eventually committed suicide, devastated by the success of the woman he loved, a success to which he had contributed so much. One of the most famous melodramas about the Hollywood Star System, based on a 1932 film by George Cukor, which makes the most of the possibilities offered by the Technicolor process and the chemistry of the couple Janet Gaynor-Fredric March. This film, which won two Oscars (for Best Original Screenplay and for Cinematography), has been remade three times: by George Cukor in 1954, by Frank Pierson in 1976 and by Bradley Cooper in 2018.
