In post-war New York, the body of a young woman is found. Police Detective Dan Muldoon (Barry Fitzgerald) and his assistant Jimmy Halloran (Don Taylor) begin to investigate the victim’s life. They discover that she was the daughter of two Czechoslovakian refugees and was linked to a series of robberies. The culprit is eventually identified and makes a desperate escape, on foot, through the streets of New York, ending up between the pillars of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Filmed almost as a documentary, akin to Italian neo-realism by some critics, Dassin’s masterpiece is a searing critique of the contradictions of life in the metropolis, enhanced by William Daniels’ Oscar-winning photography.
