Western Union is laying telegraph cables throughout North America, bringing this innovation to less civilised territories. The compagny employs the surveyor Edward and his beautiful sister Sue as an operator, as well as the unbelievable cowboy Blake and the former outlaw, now redeemed, Vance. The progress proceeds at a fast pace, but assaults by Indians and bandits make the going very difficult. The leader of the gang of thugs is Jack, Vance’s brother: Vance is thus called upon to make a tough choice between emotional ties and loyalty to the company. A Western of high calibre, with plenty of Indians, gun fights and love stories, but in which Fritz Lang also includes a subtle psychological investigation.
