True Heart Susie (Lillian Gish) secretly loves her neighbour, William Jenkins (Robert Harron), but neither can confess their feelings for the other. After college William returns home, but ends up marrying the young Bettina before long. It is only after her death that William and Susie are able to declare their love for each other… One of Griffith’s lesser-known works, but considered by some to be his true masterpiece, True Heart Susie is a film in which Lillian Gish’s portrayal of Susie presents a limitless number of emotions.
