At the end of the 19th century, in a small Northern European country. Jury president Karl Victor is confronted with the case of a young woman who has secretly killed her newborn child. She is sentenced to death, but Karl soon realises that it is actually his daughter. This is a drama with psychological overtones, thanks in part to Dreyer’s talent for combining elements of the judge’s past with the present story by means of flashbacks, a technique that had a strong narrative impact and was almost revolutionary for its time.
