Mary McMillan (Vera Sisson) is the daughter of tycoon John McMillan. She is deeply in love with Douglas McKee (Frank Newburg), an up-and-coming young lawyer, while her stepmother Ethel (Kathleen Kirkham) is the lover of the evil Count Roberto di San Fraccini (Valentino). McMillan is plagued by guilt over his involvement in a violent brawl in which a man was killed, even though he himself was not directly responsible for the homicide… A melodrama rich in intrigues, this is one of the first films of Rudolf Valentino, who plays a character devoid of any scruples, before becoming an international star.
