Nathan Milstein was born in Odessa (Russia) in 1904. He studied in Odessa under Stoliarsky, then in St. Petersburg with Leopold Auer. In 1923 he began his concert career as a duo with the pianist Vladimir Horowitz. After perfecting his skills in Brussels with Eugène Ysaÿe, he left Russia in 1925 to tour Europe. He moved to the United States and was granted American citizenship in 1929. He played chamber music with Piatigorsky and Rachmaninov, and gave concerts with conductors such as Toscanini, Walter, Furtwiingler, Klemper, Leinsdorf, Giulini, Jochum and Abbado. In September 1986 he was awarded the ‘Life for Music’ prize in Venice. He died in Venice on 21 December 1992.
