NICANOR ZABALETA (San Sebastian, 7.1.1907 – Puerto Rico, 31.3.1993). He studied music in his native city and then at the Madrid Conservatory before going on to perfect his skills at the Paris Conservatory with M. Tournier, E. Cools and M.S. Rousseau. He went to America in 1934. He performed in the United States and in South America. Afterwards he toured Europe extensively. From 1958 to 1962 he taught at the summer courses of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Winner of the Grand Prix du Disque in 1959, he encouraged many composers (including D. Milhaud, J. Rodrigo, H. Villa-Lobos, G. Tailleferre, E. Krenek, A. Ginastera, W. Piston and V. Thompson) to write music for harp. He played an eight-pedal instrument that J. Obermayer had built especially for him. He worked on numerous editions and transcriptions of harp music.
