EDWIN LOEHRER (Andwil (SG), 27.11.1906 – Orselina (Locarno), 10.8.1991) Conductor and choirmaster. He studied composition and conducting at the Tonkusterakademie in Munich (from 1927 to 1930), organ at the Zurich Conservatory and musicology at the University of Zurich. From 1936 to 1981 he directed the Coro della Radio della Svizzera Italiana, which he had founded himself, and with which he gave numerous radio performances, dedicated in particular to Italian music before the 19th century. In 1961 he founded the Società Cameristica di Lugano, a vocal and instrumental ensemble which he conducted on numerous tours in his homeland and abroad, performing Italian music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He made numerous recordings with this ensemble, several of which were awarded the ‘Grand Prix du Disque’.
