Lulu Bett (Lois Wilson) is part of the Deacon family, living in the Midwest in the 1920s. The head of the family Dwight is strict with everyone, his daughter, his wife Ina, his mother-in-law and his wife’s sister, Lulu Bett, who is treated like a servant. The girl is also married to Dwight’s brother who already has another wife, but she is forced to keep quiet to avoid a scandal. Only in the end does Lulu Bett find the courage to leave the house, heading, without money, towards an unknown but free destiny… Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Zona Gale, the film directed by William DeMille, brother of the more famous Cecil, with whom he also worked for a long time after his beginnings in the theatre, is a family saga of extraordinary intensity from which emerges a character of a woman of great strength and capable of rebelling against the unwritten rules of her era.
