A sensational live performance by Miram Makeba at the Estival Jazz in Lugano in 1985. Mama Afrika’, born on 4 March 1932 in Johannesburg, died on 9 November 2008 in Castel Volturno (Italy), at the age of sixty-six, after a heart attack following a concert in support of the writer Roberto Saviano. She began writing her first songs in the 1950s, songs that later became big hits: Pata Pata, The Click Song (‘Qongqothwane’ in Xhosa) and Malaika are all mythical songs that Miriam Makeba composed and performed since she moved to Europe and then to the United States, without ever abandoning her political commitment against apartheid.
