Wanted by the police, fugitive Alonzo (Lon Chaney) poses as a armless man and gets hired in a circus. There he meets and falls in love with Estellita Nanon (Joan Crawford), but when her father discovers Alonzo’s identity, he is forced to kill him, thus revealing his secret…

One of the greatest masterpieces created by the genius of Tod Browning, the author of “Freaks”, who deals here with a melodrama of love pushed to its extreme consequences with equally shattering performances by Lon Chaney, “the man of a thousand faces”, and the future diva Joan Crawnford.
