Three circus performers in disguise – the dwarf Harry Earles as a child, the ventriloquist Lon Chaney as an old lady and the giant Victor McLagen as a quiet citizen – end up committing a murder. An accomplice (Mae Busch) causes the ventriloquist to repent. At the trial they are all acquitted, but they will still get their punishment…

Once again, the focus of attention of one of the most accursed directors in the history of cinema is on people marginalised by some kind of physical handicap, who it is impossible for them to count on the understanding of the world around them, as if to confirm that their destiny is to be exhibited, exposed to the morbid curiosity of the people, and therefore to a humanity that in turn shows itself… with its worst face.
