The film is a melodrama about a girl who falls into the trap of prostitution and crime with her pimp and lover, but finds redemption in true love…

It is the result of a unique collaboration between three extraordinary women of American cinema, Adela Rogers St. John, Dorothy Arzner (who wrote the story) and Dorothy Davenport Reid, who co-directed and produced. Based on a real-life case involving Gabrielle Darley, a former prostitute who was tried in a high-profile murder trial and eventually acquitted. After the trial, Darley led an exemplary life, but her story was used as the inspiration for this film, leading Darley to sue the producers in the California Court of Appeals.
