A young Spanish peasant with pacifist convictions takes up arms to defend his land against those who want to overthrow the Republican regime. This film has the audacity and courage to be dedicated to the controversial Spanish Civil War, a theme that Hollywood had refused to tackle, which led to pressure on the producers not to release the film. Produced by Walter Wanger, with a screenplay by John Howard Lawson, the film had Dieterle’s talent as well as a young Henry Fondy and Madeleine Carroll in the role of a spy.
