Astor Piazzolla, born in 1921 and died in 1992, is the greatest Tango poet of the last century. His Tango was already symphonic before he adapted it to the symphony orchestra. It is so inseparable from the contrapuntal conception, in which each instrumental part is linked by a relationship of necessity without distinction between main voice and accompaniment, that in its symphonic version it becomes instead the final explicitation of a goal that was tendentially implicit in his ‘chamber’ Tango. Piazzolla’s Tango resonates directly as an expression of our own reality.
