CAVEDAGNE

Bologna, 2002.

The streets of the city form a ‘labyrinth’ where many characters wander, struggling to find their way or simply to live. Among them are Bernardo, torn between his job as a lawyer and his passion for cooking and catering; his friends Carlo and Giulio; Vera, from Latin America; Bene, a young student at the DAMS struggling with the materialisation of Death; Igor and Viktor, two brothers of Russian origin who hang out in the underworld and are unable to find their place in society. An industrial warehouse that has not been emptied becomes the place where the dreams and destinies of Bernardo and Carlo, on one hand, and Igor and Viktor, on the other hand, cross and clash. What follows is a delirious journey/chase that takes the characters out of the city and into the countryside and the sea. At the end of the journey, Bernardo manages to ‘get out of the labyrinth’ and find the strength to cultivate his own dreams. Cavedagne, a word from the Bolognese dialect, refers to the dirt roads that delimit the fields – with the risk, after drinking too much, of finding oneself ‘in the cavadagne’, after getting lost (to use Paolo Mereghetti’s words) – was programmed for more than six months at the Officinema di Bologna, every Tuesday evening, and became a real ‘cult film’, seen by almost 4,000 spectators.
